Benched
A comedy in one act by Allyson Currin
3 women, unit set

Synopsis:
Meghan, Timby and Joan meet every day at the same park bench to laugh, commiserate and complain about the challenges of motherhood. They don't even realize the co-dependent unit they have become, until one of them confronts one of life's powerful changes, and their connection is threatened in a profound and frightening way. Sample dialogue:

JOAN
No guilt. Go to A Fine Fete and buy away. I love A Fine Fete. It's the tits.

TIMBY
Eeww, don't say that.

JOAN
"It's the tits?" Why not?

TIMBY
It's sexist.

JOAN
I'm a woman.

TIMBY
It sounds nasty.

JOAN
It's funny.

TIMBY
Find another expression to convey your delight in something. Please.

JOAN
"It's the testicles."
Doesn't have the same ring.

MEGHAN
Speaking of testicles –

TIMBY
We're not!

MEGHAN
-- Adam Alert – he's headed for Jodi.

JOAN
Where's Noki?
Dammit, what I pay that woman breaks me and if she isn't watching my kids like a hawk–

MEGHAN
She's on it.

Beat.

TIMBY
I should cook.
I don't cook.

MEGHAN
You're a good cook.

JOAN
ADAM! STOP HITTING!
Sorry. He's going through his Caligula phase.

MEGHAN
Not to worry.

JOAN
Little demons. Playing war already.
When I was six, I was nursing sick baby birds and walking my cats around in a stroller.

TIMBY
You were a nurturer?

JOAN
It was a phase.

TIMBY
Hm. Gotta love those gender dynamics.
A boy develops differently.

MEGHAN
A boy is a different critter.

JOAN
A boy is a cognitive clusterfuck.
