The Colony
A Comedy in Two Acts by Allyson Currin
3 women, 2 men, unit set

Synopsis:
Josh has just gotten his first grant at the prestigious writers' colony, The Lyceum, and he can't wait to get started on his novel. But this colony is…different from other colonies. Josh just can't seem to figure out how…until a series of strange encounters from the other inmates…er, writers…shows him just how dangerous it can be to be talented. Sample dialogue:

META
Do you need anything?

JOSH
Meta, hi! What could I need?

META
Exactly what I love to hear.
Was the lunch delivered to your cabin on time?

JOSH
Oh, yes.

META
How was the veal?

JOSH
Mwah!

META
Is the bedding comfortable?

JOSH
Of course.

META
Is the stream too loud?

JOSH
Huh?

META
I'm jesting.

JOSH
Ha-ha!

META
Ha-ha! It is such a privilege to have you here. Truly.

JOSH
Gosh –

META
Josh?

JOSH
Mm?

META
I've never told this to anyone. But I feel the need to tell it to you.

JOSH
Okay.

META
You see, I don't know how to hold back. And you seem ready to receive.

JOSH
Okay. Sure.

META
This entire retreat was built on one thing.
Sincerity.
The sincerity of the dreams of a frustrated artist.
A little girl who wanted to be great.
A little girl who wanted to be a prima ballerina.
Who wanted to dance with the best, the brightest.
Who wanted to dance with the New York City Ballet.
Until she got too tall.
Started to gain weight.
Discovered sex and stopped rehearsing.
But the dream never died.
So that little girl made this choice.
To stand up for other artists and make the world easier for their work.
That's sincerity.
And she hasn't wavered from that mission since this retreat was established.
So if that stream outside your window is too loud –
I know how it is for you artists from the city!
You're not used to natural sounds.
And that little incident with the bears was sheer fluke.
So if there is anything –
Do you hear her – ANYTHING.

JOSH
Anything.

META
That you need.

JOSH
That I need.

META
Ask.

JOSH
Okay.

META
Ask.

JOSH
I will.

META
ASK. (Beat) Just don't ask Herb!

Right on cue, unseen, Herb enters, lurks, exits.

META
You can go straight to the top. To her. Me.

JOSH
Thank you. I'm just glad to be here.

META
I'm glad you're glad. We're both glad. Isn't that revolutionary?
